Manibozho

Manibozho
Hero of the Creation Legend of the Algonkian Indians. On one occasion he was hunting when a great lake overflowed and submerged the world. From his place of refuge he sent a raven to seek for land, but the bird came back. The second time he sent an otter, and the third time a musk-rat, who reported that the flood had died down. He was known as ‘the Great Hare’, and in view of the similarity between the word for hare and that for light he was probably a sun god. He subsequently married the musk-rat, becoming the ancestor of the tribe.
